I am not a sports fan....indeed I am turned off by professional and collegiate sports for many of the reasons Bill raises. I loved to watch our son, Aron, play ice hockey as a pre-teen and now relish the pure joy I see in our grandson and his friends as they play soccer. Whether they win or lose is not important...they are having fun. But sports at any other level turn me off. Pro and collegiate sports are a business and, unfortunately, the business model is often profit at any cost...even despicable behavior. To what degree are college sports different from the human slavery we hear about in undeveloped countries? To be sure, student athletes sign up with their parents' approval...they are not snatched away in the middle of the night. But how many talented youngsters or their families can resist the years of intense marketing? I had a parent tell me that it didn't matter if her son could read; he was heading for the NBA. She challenged me not to "give" him a grade that would disqualify him from the middle school basketball team. I can only hope that the Penn State story will help strip away another ugly layer of child abuse...behavior already revealed in the world of scouting and the Catholic church.

Although I am not a huge baseball fan, I could relate to this post. I especially love the line, "Here and now is what's important." There are no truer words. My goal each day is to enjoy the "moments," since the years seem to go by so quickly. Thanks, Bill!

Another interesting question to ponder would be, How does searching for what you do not have effect what you do have in front of you? How much mental, emotional and spiritual energy do we waste.
I used to have a German Shepherd dog as a child that would at times see his tail out of the corner of his eye and chase his tail in circles for a moment until he became dizzy and exhausted, Are we not like my dog at times?
